Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe Review

Emergencies never happen when it is convenient.  They are most likely to happen when you are away from gear or tools that would be helpful.  So it would be ideal to have some helpful tools that you can carry on you at all times until you can get to a full kit.  The Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe is a tool that you should take into consideration.

I was recently searching for a tool to place in my vehicle in case of emergencies.  In my search I came across the Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe.  It appealed to me because it provides not only a SafeSpeed assisted blade but has some additional tools like a belt cutter, flat head driver, hex wrench, glass breaker and carabiner.  Being able to quickly access a blade could be crucial during an emergency.

The Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe is a part of a series that was produced by Kershaw.  There are two other blades in the Funxion series including the Outdoor and DIY blades.  The blades are identical they just provide different types of tools than the EMT version.

There is also another version of the Kersahw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe which is the 8100GRYST.  The blade and the tools are identical.  The only difference is with the construction of the handle which is supposed to be lighter and provide a better grip.  Being that Kershaw is a well-known name in the knife industry I figured that I would check it out.  So here is my review of the Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe.

Testing

My Thoughts

Overall I was impressed with the sharpness and quality of the blade.  The SpeedSafe quickly flips the blade out into a locking position making it extremely helpful in an emergency.  I like the fact that it provides a glass breaker in case that I ever need to break a window to get out of a car or to access a fire extinguisher.

However, I feel that the glass breaker tip is a tad small compared to other glass breakers that I have used.  In my testing video it took my about 3 hits to break a glass beer bottle.  With the UZI Tactical pen I have been able to break a bottle on the first hit.

Now this knife isn’t meant to replace a multi-tool.  This is really meant for emergency purposes.  It was initially designed for EMT professionals but is helpful to everyone.  The belt cutter quickly cut through paracord like nobody’s business.  So that would be extremely useful for someone involved in an accident or assisting at a scene.

The carabiner is the only questionable tool on this knife.  I can’t figure out how the carabiner would be helpful in an emergency situation.  You wouldn’t be able to hang anything with it.  It only attaches to something.

The only complaint that I have with this knife is the handle’s construction.  It definitely gets very slippery when wet.  Now I’m not sure how often I would be using this in a wet environment but again emergencies never happen conveniently.

Besides that I really love the ergonomics of the knife.  It fits like a glove when you hold it.  I’m able to wrap all my fingers around it providing a great grip while cutting.

Pros

  • Very fast SafeSpeed assist
  • Extremely sharp blade
  • Durable
  • Lightweight
  • Multiple tools
  • Great ergonomic handle
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Slippery handle
  • Small pocket clip

Overall the Kershaw 8100 Funxion EMT with SpeedSafe is a great quality knife.  With the Kershaw name you know that the blade is going to take a beating.  On top of that you have a lifetime warranty so there really isn’t any risk.  If you looking for a tool to carry for emergencies then I would highly recommend picking up one today.
