SPG 17: Prepper Emergency Food Preparedness Assessment

 

You can only survive 3 weeks without food.  In this episode, we will be continuing the series of assessments inspired by The Strategic Prepper eBook.  This assessment will be on the emergency food that you have supplied.  I also give tips on how to quickly build up a supply on a budget.

How much food do you have stored per person?

  • This is based on a 2200 calorie per day diet.
  • Food could be canned, jarred and/or dehydrated
  • You should consider how much meat that you have per pound
  • consider fruits and vegetables by servings
  • grains by pounds
  • MREs by quantity
  • In a previous post, I talked about the basics of emergency food storage that I will link in the show notes at www.smartpreppergear.com/spg17
  • generally, we are told that we should have 7 days of emergency food supply
  • Some other sources will recommend up to 30 days of emergency food
  • Typically this is in preparation for smaller scale events
  • However, after conducting a threat assessment if you are preparing for extreme scenarios then you may want to have up to a year of food
  • Ultimately, you are going to be limited to the amount of space and finances that you have

Canned food Pros

  • takes up little space
  • inexpensive
  • long shelf life
  • easy to prepare, sometimes even without food
  • portable
  • easy to barter

Canned food cons:

  • nutritional value

Dehydrated food pros

  • the lightest option of emergency food storage
  • longest lasting shelf life

Dehydrated food cons

  • second most expensive option
  • takes up a lot of space
  • needs water and heat to prepare

MRE Pros:

  • easy to prepare with just water
  • portable

MRE Cons:

  • the most expensive option
  • takes up a lot of storage space

Do you have a renewable food supply?

  • you can multiply your survivability by decreasing your dependency on others
  • this is what we call self-sufficient
  • now there is a finite supply of food
  • however, if you can create a renewable resource of food
  • Some renewable food supply options include a garden, livestock, orchard, fish pound
  • If you live in the city in apartments or small lawns then you may be limited on the ability to create a renewable resource
  • This is why it is important to have a strategic plan to relocate to where you are able to do so
  • Not only will you need the land and space but you will need to have agricultural skills
  • If you are not familiar with agriculture then you can typically find a local farmer that is looking for some work
  • Some local colleges and technical trade schools provide training in agriculture

Do you have means to preserve food supply?

  • once you establish a renewable food supply then you will need the ability to preserve that food
  • food goes bad in multiple ways
  • Yes, you could freeze that food for a time, but what if the grid goes down?
  • Instead, you should consider other options
  • some food replenishing options include canning, jarring, and dehydrating
  • now getting a dehydrating machine is pretty expensive
  • canning and jarring may be the cheapest option to get started with
  • although jars are pretty expensive they are reusable
  • so they are really an invest
  • this is in comparison to cans that cannot be reused
  • now if you invest in a canner or dehydrator there are some ways to earn money back
  • one great option is to sell food
  • if you are growing or raising more food than your family needs then you can sell your own line of emergency food supplies
  • now this might not make you a ton of money back but it should easily cover the cost of the equipment
